Martin has almost 40 years’ experience in the automotive industry, having commenced his apprenticeship on 18th September 1978. He worked initially in a Main British Leyland, Massey Ferguson and Opel Dealership until one of the Directors left to set up his own independent garage in 1980 and Martin joined him and completed his apprenticeship as a Motor Mechanic in 1982. In 1986 he was promoted to Workshop foreman as the business developed and they were awarded the Main Opel Dealership for Co. Sligo. In 1987 there was a greater demand for Japanese Motor Vehicles and The Dealership opted to diversify and opted for the Nissan Franchise and Martin continued to work as a hands-on foreman until 1995 when he took on the role of aftersales manager. A role he held until April 2002 when he left to start work as a Motor Vehicle Assessor under the tutelage of John Kane, one of the founding members of Assess Ireland at John Kane Assessors.
During his time at John Kane Assessors Martin achieved Associate Membership of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers and The Society of Operations Engineers. He has also successfully completed a course in Advanced Vehicle Fire Investigation at Park Lodge International Ltd Fire Safety & Investigation Consultants in Surrey U.K. This training has proven to be of massive benefit when examining fire damaged vehicles and investigating causes and source of fires in motor vehicles.
One of his out of work interests saw him completely restore a Classic MINI for one of his sons. He has been heavily involved in Local Junior Soccer where he was a member of the Sligo Leitrim and District Soccer League and is a former Chairman of the Connacht F.A. Junior Committee. He also has a keen interest in photography.
